The Project

The new principal office of the Idom Group is located in a former bonded warehouse (a customs port warehouse) in Deusto canal in the Port of Bilbao, Spain. It has an area of 14,400 m2 for offices, research and development areas such as a clean room, a prototype workshop and social areas.

An important objective of the project was to achieve a large open work space, with extensive intra- and inter-departmental visual communication, without barriers between the different levels of function and assignment to the Idom firm. In the centre of the floors, a hall is used as an area for secretaries, or as a lounge area for talking by mobile phone without disturbing other colleagues.

The application

In the largest work areas, few offices have been planned, although there are many internal meeting rooms and team work rooms. In order to prevent creation of psychological barriers between the offices, rooms and the open area, Idom preferred not to use a conventional partition closure, with fixed glass and door, but rather a sliding closure that would eliminate the barriers. EXTENDO, the telescopic synchronized system by KLEIN, was the option that best integrated the different areas in order to achieve the objective established.

"EXTENDO offers greater opening, leaving a clear passageway without any floor tracks"

EXTENDO system offers greater opening, leaving a clear passageway without any floor tracks. To continue the concept of integration, in some offices the track has been recessed in the ceiling and in others it remains visible, according to the construction needs, with a special black anodized aluminium finish that gives continuity to the dark ceiling. The 2-doors system opens all of the panels synchronously by simply activating the leading door, sliding along the length of a fixed glass panel set in the same extrusion as the mobile panels.
